Welcome to Valise

Reading Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, was an a-ha moment for many. The process of unloading seldom used items and clothing without guilt was the message many of us needed to move past items that dragged us down physically, emotionally, and monetarily. With less to worry about and maintain, we can concentrate on the people and things that matter to us most.
Angel Chandler took the philosophy beyond her own home and closet. After applying the method to her own life, she set out looking for clothing and accessories that supported her desire to own a few, quality pieces that were timeless, classic and versatile. She didn’t find any local options. “I was really looking for 4-5 pieces that would replace 20 items but still leave me with a closet of great outfits,” said Chandler. “Unfortunately the quality just wasn’t there and often style or cut wasn’t flattering,” she added.
In September Chandler’s Valise Boutique and Apothecary opened its doors. Filled with timeless pieces hand-picked for their quality, tailoring and versatility, Valise offers women high-quality pieces that work for every occasion. In addition to clothing, Valise also carries natural and organic apothecary items, jewelry and accessories.
So what does a lean, parred down wardrobe look like? According to Chandler, it combines elements of Kondo’s book along with some European style habits. “With well-tailored trousers, a great pair of jeans, a skirt, a few tops and a tailored jacket, women can be prepared for nearly every event,” said Chandler.
Located near the corner of St. Clair Avenue and Albert Street in St. Paul, Valise carries imported items as well as clothing and outwear made in the USA. Pick up any item at Valise and you’ll immediately understand what Chandler is going for. Button down shirts feature delicate, tight stitching and a well-fitted design. Trousers are flattering and comfortable without sacrificing style. Dresses flatter a variety of body shapes and can be dressed up or down.
Choosing to purchase one piece you love instead of five of something you kind of like becomes easier once you begin to head down the path. “Starting with one beautifully made blouse or a pair of well-tailored trousers will make it easier to appreciate the value of owning quality pieces,” she added.
